The Annals of Hermes

For three thousand years Hermes has been the god of roads, messengers and divine mischief. For one week in 2026 he was an art car, and it crossed Black Rock City mostly at night, mostly out past the edge of the streets where the city stops pretending to be a grid. People could send for it — for a ride home, or for a set played off its deck at four in the morning. This is what it did, day by day, as far as anyone was there to write it down.

Kept by DJ Metavillan, who was aboard for every night in this book from the thirtieth of August on, with Coral Daddy out with him for three of them. Hermes is on Instagram as @hermesartcar.

The programme, as printed before the week began — Hermes at Axis Mundi, 31 August to 6 September, draft 27. It promised at least a 30% chance of finding the car at any of these places, which turned out to be about right. Some of it happened, some of it did not, and a good deal of what follows is not on it at all.

Before

Juplaya in July, and the build days before the log starts

The track begins on the twenty-eighth of August, so none of this is a day in the account below: there is nothing to draw and no stops to list. It is here because it happened. Hermes was out on the Black Rock playa in July, two months early — parked at Spanky's Wine Bar after dark, and out on open ground at golden hour — and the same propeller and rope-wound lamps turn up again in the build days at the end of August, when the car stood unlit in the daylight and the first sets were played off its deck before there was a week to play them in.

The first two hours, spent standing still

Every story about Hermes begins with him already in motion, which makes this a strange first page: the god of the road spent his opening afternoon standing perfectly still. From four until six on Friday it stood at 8:45 and F, out where the streets thin and the city stops pretending to be a grid, and in two hours it covered seventy metres — roughly the width of its own parking spot. The camp had been pitched more than a kilometre from the Man, a long walk from the centre of everything, which says nothing about wandering and everything about where its people chose to sleep. Nobody had asked it for a ride. Nobody knew it was there. It sat in the heat with its lights off, waiting to be sent for — which is the one thing a messenger cannot do for himself.

Out before dawn, home before the heat

Saturday began at twenty to four in the morning, in the dark, at the hour that would come to own the whole week. Two outings, about two kilometres, finished by the early afternoon — and then twelve hours in which Hermes was somewhere nobody wrote down. It came back to 8:45 and F and stayed forty minutes, the corner already behaving like a home rather than an address. Half the day went outside the city and half on the streets. What is written here is the ground between one sighting and the next, not every turn the wheels took, and the gaps are wide enough that most of Saturday belongs to the people who were inside it and to nobody else. The god of crossings spent his second day learning where his own doorstep was.

The DPW party, then Spanky's opening night

On Sunday evening Hermes finally went out, and it went out with somewhere to be: the DPW pre-event party first, the people who build the city before anyone arrives to see it, and then Spanky's opening night. DJ Metavillan was aboard, the first of the nights he would see through to the end of the week. It left at a quarter to six and did not come back until nearly midnight, and the positions put almost all of those six hours beyond the edge of the city, out where there are no streets to be on. That is where the instruments had it, which is not the same as what it was out for. Something close to eight kilometres of ground, as far as a kilometre and a half from the Man at the farthest — though on a night this thinly witnessed that figure is the distance between glimpses rather than a route. One pause worth the name: nine minutes back at 8:45 and F at about half past ten, long enough to collect somebody or hand something over, and then it was gone again into the dark, which is where this story properly starts.

Twenty-six kilometres, and Mundara

Monday is the farthest Hermes ever travelled in a day, and it travelled like something with an errand: twenty-six kilometres, four separate outings, twenty-two hours between the first move at ten past midnight and the last at ten at night. It opened the night at the Deep-Playa Music Zone, arriving just after one and staying twenty-three minutes — about as long as it takes to decide a party is not yours. Somewhere in the hours after that sits Mundara, where Human Experience — David Block — and Playa Riders both played. Unusually for that week the rest of the day was spent inside the city rather than out past the fence: a day of streets and corners and being seen rather than of disappearing. Twenty-two hours is a long time to be moving, and much of it went unwatched. The distance is only the sum of what was witnessed.

The night the box opened, and nobody knocked

Six outings on Tuesday, twelve kilometres, from two in the morning until nearly eleven at night, most of it out beyond the streets — and for the first time there were two of them aboard, Coral Daddy out with it now as well. It came back to the Deep-Playa Music Zone at ten past two and gave it seventeen minutes, then stopped at 8:45 and F for twelve more before the night ended. It went by the Gaian Airship at 3:30 and D, which is the one thing all week that happened on the night the programme said it would. And this was the day Hermes started taking requests: a form anybody could use to ask for a ride, or for a set played off the deck. A messenger god opened a door and stood behind it. Exactly one message came through, and it was from itself — a test pickup at Center Camp, filed to prove the thing worked. It did work. It sat there all day with nobody on the other end of it.

A badge for best sunrise, and the night strangers started asking

A photograph from the annals

Wednesday is the day it all came together, and it came together in the right order. It opened at ten to one in the morning with two strangers asking to be collected, one from 2 and E and one from 12 and D. It is also the day Hermes won its badge for best sunrise — the god of boundaries at his oldest work, standing on the line between the night and the day. By late afternoon three more people wanted the deck rather than a lift: Unitone asked for two until four in the morning out of Bisou, with a ride into deep playa; Justin asked for the sunrise; Anton asked for house, bright major tones. At nine in the evening the car passed within six metres of Small Beginnings, near enough to read, and inside the same few minutes went by I Have Dust In Curious Places and the art car The Future Mirror. This is the day it stopped being a thing people saw and became a thing people sent for, which is the whole of what Hermes is for. It took five days.

A late-night opera, and never once back in the city

On Thursday night Hermes did not set foot in the city. Not once, not for a minute — the whole night was spent out past the fence, and at its farthest it stood two kilometres from the Man, deeper into the open than it ever went again. Nine outings adding up to under two kilometres, because it was not going anywhere so much as returning: an hour and a half at 8:45 and F across four separate visits, leaving and coming back and leaving again, like something pacing a boundary it had chosen for itself. Late in the night there was an opera. The hours worth having were between three and six in the morning, out among Altar of Awen, A Quiet Place to Scream and Polio Rodeo, with Puzzling Evidence and Trash Fence Souvenirs somewhere alongside in the dark. Coral Daddy was aboard for all of it, and so was DJ Metavillan. Nobody asked it for anything all day. It went anyway.

Rain, Shabbat aboard, and the Titanic at eleven

It rained on Friday, and rain on the playa stops everything: the dust turns to a mud no wheel will turn in, and the city sits down to wait. So Friday does not begin until ten past six in the evening — and when it did, Hermes went straight out past the fence and stayed; not one position that night is inside the city. It had been asked to be a stage: the BRC Shabbat dinner needed one, and David Block played it as Human Experience — from seven until quarter past nine the car stood within sixty metres of The Lightning Tower while the dinner went on around it, a trickster's vehicle holding still to keep a Sabbath. Then forty minutes near G String, and on to the TITANIC: nine thousand hours of building, two hundred people, and a fire about eleven, a good hour past the last position of the night. Every request that day came from Minerva, four times over: from 8:45 and G, from the helicopter at BRC Metro Chop, once for a set for herself and Digital. Roaming around, party hopping, anytime you want to pick us up. For that night the crew came away playa heroes, which for a god of the road means being where you said you would be.

Best burn night, and a set shared with Robot Heart

Saturday was burn night, and it is the night Hermes shared a set with Robot Heart — Seth Schwarz playing Hermes, Edward Castillo playing Robot Heart, two decks run as one, and a badge for best burn night between them. Of that, the positions know nothing whatsoever. They give a single minute at seventeen minutes past eight in the evening, sixteen metres from As Above So Below and still inside the city, with the art cars Nora and The Future Mirror a couple of hundred metres off, and then they stop — hours before the part anybody would want described. So Saturday is the day the camera does the remembering instead, and @flowpriestess is in the footage. The night that won the badge is the thinnest night in the record: the city's largest fire, a prize for it, and nothing at all keeping count, which is the ordinary condition of a good night. Nor did it end on Saturday: the cook-off and the link-up with the Serpent Queen ran on past midnight, and the record only picks the night back up as Sunday.

From the cook-off to the temple burn

Sunday starts where Saturday refused to finish. The three hours after midnight are the only stretch of the whole day the positions caught, and they hold the cook-off and the link-up with the Serpent Queen — the steamboat — burn night still running on. Just after one, Hermes was thirty-seven metres from Plastic Planet. By four in the morning it had found OVO Ignis, almost two kilometres out from the Man, with Enceladus a few hundred metres behind it. @myhigherflow was among those playing off its deck while it went. Then nothing for sixteen hours, which is not to say nothing happened. The nude cruise went out in the daytime. The evening was the poop cruise, with DJ Metavillan playing a set called Drop It Like It's Hot. And after that the temple burn: the quiet fire, the one the city watches without a sound, and the one the old stories would have sent Hermes to, since guiding the dead was always part of the job. Three of the four things the last Sunday was for are missing from the record of it entirely.

Where it stopped

It ends at twenty-five to ten on Monday evening, inside the city, three-quarters of a kilometre from the Man. Message to the Parents We Should Have Had stood a few hundred metres away and the art car Panopticonotopia 3.0! somewhere beyond it. Hermes moved about thirty metres, the length of itself and a little more, and stopped. There is no last journey and no drive home, because nobody was writing by then — the week simply runs out mid-sentence, the way they always do. Everything after this happened, and happened to people who were there for it, and is not in this book. Gods of the road do not get endings, only the next crossing.

The seven circles

Before he was a car, Hermes was the fastest of the Greek gods — the messenger, the psychopomp, the only Olympian free to travel everywhere, and a thief by the evening of the day he was born. Fused with Thoth in Egypt he became Hermes Trismegistus, whose Corpus Hermeticum has the soul rising after death through seven planetary circles, letting go of one earthly thing at each ring.

Source Library has collected seven versions of that gesture — the whole cosmos drawn as nested rings — from a 1540 volvelle printed for Charles V through Fludd, Boehme, the Rosicrucians, the Bardo Thodol and the crown chakra to a 2012 map of the observable universe. Five centuries, and none of the makers ever saw each other's work.
